When planning to start a project it is very important to understand the order of the things you want to do, strictly from a design perspective. Selecting colors, the style and textures that work well with each other can make or break your project.
Since refacing of the cabinets takes up most of the visual space in the kitchen, it should be done first. Once this is completed, the homeowner can get the full impact of the new doors, new color and how it works with the rest of the room. This is now a good time to start looking for options and colors for countertops, since you can lay the countertop samples next to the cabinets and evaluate how well they work with the cabinets. Once the refacing and countertops have been completed, you can start looking at different options for backsplashes that coordinate with the countertop and the cupboards.
If you use this step by step approach, you can be quite sure that the final look of the kitchen will be harmonious.
That being said, there is a caveat to the above mentioned order and that is when a stone countertop needs to be installed. Since all cabinets need to be levelled before the installation of a stone countertop, many times installers need to use shims in order to achieve a level and this can sometimes create a gap between the base cabinets and the countertop. If refacing is done after installing the countertop, these gaps can be easily covered.
Lastly, if you are also changing the floor, we suggest that it be done before the refacing, as sometimes there can be damage to the base cabinets occurring from tile installation.
